| Beschreibung (dt.): | Übergeordnetes Ziel des Projektes ist es, die Basis für eine Bündelung der Kompetenz für Tiergesundheit und Tierschutz beim Schaf zu legen und Haltungs- sowie Zuchtempfehlungen für schafhaltende Betriebe zur Verbesserung der Tiergesundheit unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Selektion auf Kurzschwänzigkeit zu entwickeln. Gesamtziel des Projektes ist eine nachhaltige Steigerung des Tierwohls in der Schafhaltung in einem Kompetenzwerk unter Berücksichtigung der Datenerhebung zur Tiergesundheit (KGGA Gießen), der darauf basierenden zu entwickelnden Zuchtwertschätzung (Tierzucht = TZ Gießen), der Organisation partizipierender Netzwerkbetriebe bzgl. Bildung und Digitalisierung (LLH) und des Wissenstransfers (FIBL). Der Fokus ist hierbei auf Aspekte des Managements, der Tiergesundheit und des Tierwohlbefindens im Kontext der Zucht auf Kurzschwänzigkeit beim Schaf gerichtet. |
| Beschreibung (engl.): | Overall aim of the project is to establish expertise for sheep health, sheep welfare and sheep protection via optimisation of management, breeding and husbandry strategies. In this regard, special focus is on selection on short tails, i.e., developing sustainable strategies considering short tail selection in the context of overall animal health. The overall aim of this project for sheep health improvements will be realized in the framework of the established expertise network through detailed health data recording (KGGA Gießen), the development and implementation of genetic evaluation on the basis of the recorded health data (Animal Breeding = TZ Gießen), the organisation of networking in participating herds with special focus on education and digitalisation (LLH) and knowledge transfer (FIBL). Two research groups from Gießen university (KGGA and animal breeding = TZ) are partners in the expertise network. According to the full proposal, they are involved in all main work packages (WP) as follows: WP 2: Data recording and animal health (responsibility: KGGA). WP 2 comprises the development of the project database which includes cases addressing animal protection from the literature plus current data from the research station LFE-OH and participating sheep herds in the field. Further part of WP 2 are the detailed recordings of fertility and health traits, which may be associated with tail length. WP 3: Breeding on short tails (responsibility: TZ). WP 3 focuses on genetic analyses and genetic evaluations for tail length in sheep. In this regard, we will measure tail length on LFE-OH and in participating herds in the field. Genetic analyses also includes the traits as recorded by KGGA in WP2. We will estimate genetic correlations among all sheep traits to assess the impact of tail length breeding strategies on selection response in functional health as well as in in economically important production traits. Economic weights for all important sheep traits will be derived based on a comprehensive producer survey. All parameters are imperative to develop an overall selection instrument for animal welfare. WP4: Implementation of management strategies with regard to sheep health and welfare (KGGA). WP 5: Development of check lists (KGGA) and publications (KGGA, TZ). In the framework of the scientific evaluations of participating networking herds, we will develop a system for monitoring on a herd-gate level. |
