Titel: Nachhaltige Schweine-Produktionssysteme (SusPigSys) - Teilvorhaben 2
Titel (englisch): Sustainable pig production systems
Akronym: SusPigSys
Beschreibung (engl.): Despite pig farmers’ needs for recommendations on how to optimise the balance between apparently conflicting pillars of sustainability (economy, environment, society), there is very little on-farm data to support informed holistic decisions. SusPigSys therefore aims at collecting, summarising and disseminating evidence-based information on successful strategies for improving sustainability in various pig production systems across the EU. The overall aim of SusPigSys is, to develop integrative assessment and analysis tools for identifying commercially viable and resource efficient pig production systems with high societal acceptance (including intact tails and reduced need for medication) to support improvement of sustainability across a wide range of pig production systems. The tools will be enhanced by connecting them to existing international databases, such as InterPIG or agri benchmark Pig. Specific aims fof SusPigSys are: - To combine and advance existing protocols for collecting data regarding economy, environmental impact, animal health and welfare and farmer decision-making into protocols which can be used for assessing all sustainability pillars across systems and the EU - To create separate analysis toolboxes for economic, resource, societal and farmer aspects (based on existing analysis methods) as well as a new integrative analysis toolbox - To supplement a sustainability improvement add-on to an existing international database - To develop a farmer decision support tool (software) with farm-individual feedback including benchmarking which helps farmers to improve their farm in all pillars of sustainability' SusPigSys' objective is to collect data on sustainability improvement strategies including trade-offs between pillars and integrate this information in advisory material to help farmers make informed holistic decisions. Project outcomes include an integrative on-farm assessment and feedback tool to help pig farmers to improve their economic, environmental, and societal sustainability (e.g. animal health and welfare), as well as their job satisfaction. Farmers in all partner countries will be actively involved throughout the project to ensure that outcomes meet farmers’ needs. After researchers and stakeholders have identified points to be addressed, a detailed sustainability assessment protocol will be developed based on existing protocols and including the guidelines provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The protocol will be applied on a total of 70 farms in 7 European countries (AT, DE, FI, IT, PL, NL, UK) to generate a database from which a valid, condensed protocol can be developed using multivariate statistics. The condensed protocol will then be applied on 175 farms with various production systems in 7 countries. Data from farm visits will be used for developing an integrative analysis toolbox for summarising farm data, and the protocol and toolbox will be linked with an existing international pig production database to allow enhanced benchmarking. The integrative analysis toolbox will include information on possible trade-offs between the three pillars of sustainability and be integrated in a software to form a farmer decision support tool with farm-individual feedback. In addition, descriptions of best practices will be published in various formats to help farmers learn from each other across borders.
AT, DE, FI, IT, NL PL, UK).
Ergebnis (engl.): Pig farmers need recommendations on how to optimise the balance between apparently conflicting pillars of sustainability (economy, environment, society, animal welfare) yet there are very little on-farm data to support informed decisions. SusPigSys therefore aimed to fill this gap.
The draft protocol for collecting data with indicators for all four pillars was discussed in stakeholder workshops in each partner country to ensure completeness and relevance. The resulting detailed protocol was applied on 68 farms (10 in AT, DE, FI, IT and PL, 9 in NL and UK). In a second step, the protocol was condensed based on data quality, feasibility and reliability aspects from the first farm visits, discussions within the consortium, and additional stakeholder workshops. The condensed protocol was applied on 157 farms (25 in AT, DE, NL, and PL, 24 in IT, 21 in UK, and 12 in FI).
In parallel, formulas were developed for summarising indicators in sustainability scores at subtheme and theme level. To do this in a balanced way, experts allocated weights in a survey which indicated the influence of each indicator. The resulting “integrative system analysis toolbox” is published and is integrated in an on-farm assessment and feedback tool (app). The app can help pig farmers improve all four priorities of sustainability.
Descriptions of results are being published for different stakeholder groups as reports, videos, briefing notes, professional and scientific articles. Due to the broad scope and implementation directly in the pig industry in seven countries, the project not only yielded information relevant for individual pig farmers, but also for the pig production chain across the EU. The outcomes can furthermore be used for other research projects or advisory work.
